How Does Negative Feedback Develop You?

I love movies. One of the things that I love doing on my rest days is to watch a good movie. I watched the movie “Glass” recently and I loved it.

To those who are not aware of the movie “Glass,” the film starred Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy and Bruce Willis.

It is the last of the trilogy by M. Night Shyamalan that was about superhumans living amongst us, and the conspiracy to keep these people unknown.

Glass (Jackson) swept the world to find superhumans. He organised catastrophic accidents for the purpose of exposing people with extraordinary abilities.

In a train accident that Glass schemed, Dunn (Willis) was exposed as the invincible man who could not get injured and possessed superhuman strength. The same tragedy caused intolerable trauma to Crumb (McAvoy) which led him to develop multiple personalities which include “The Beast,” a personality that gave Crumb superhuman strength, speed and ability to crawl on walls.

“Glass” is such a mentally teasing movie and it allowed me to reflect on a lot of things. One thing that stuck with me is the idea that if Glass did not orchestrate evil tragedies, Dunn and Crumb would never have learned about their unusual abilities.

This is an extreme example and I do not want such malevolence to occur, but it does provide an example of how tragedies can elevate people to the next level.

I remember a time at work a long time ago when I had to present my project to my team for feedback. A few of my colleagues gave me the nastiest comments. It broke my heart at first, I said to myself that I didn’t need their opinion.

However, something changed my mind when I started working on my project again. I realised that their feedback, though perverse as they were, opened my mind to new ideas and it improved my project drastically. Their harsh words gave me the enthusiasm to look at new perspectives, new concepts and different methods to develop my work.

I believe this is the exact reason why Jesus chose Judas, even though He knew Judas would betray Him.

John 6:70

70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!

Jesus chose the twelve for specific reasons. Peter would be the iconic figure after Jesus went to heaven, John would take care of his mother and receive the revelation, and Judas was chosen to get Jesus crucified on the cross. Judas was responsible for getting Jesus arrested, which led to him being tried, convicted, and punished to be crucified.

An organisation that doesn’t challenge ideas will fall because of lack of perspective, oversight, foresight and hindsight if members would just agree all the time. That is why we should take it as a service to us when others provide negative feedback because it provides us with a better picture of our situation.

The challenge is to develop the emotional intelligence required so we would not take negative words personally.

When we work on this concept and find that the words still offend us, let’s give ourselves a break. We don’t have to force ourselves into becoming a sociopath. It’s okay to take our time and develop this skill at our own pace.

Bear in mind that God cares for us and will not give us challenges that we cannot bear. Remember that He is just a prayer away when things get too difficult. Let’s praise God for family and friends that give us support, and let’s praise Him for enemies that He uses to make us grow.
