I got sick. I hate being sick. One of the standards that I go by is that I don’t get sick, at least when I was younger. Back in the day I put my body through unhealthy routines— the work hard, party harder lifestyle— and all I needed was extended hours of sleep and I’m good. As I grow older my mortality is getting pretty obvious to me, I couldn’t live by my “no sickness” standard anymore. Even though I became wiser as far as taking care of my body is concerned, the elements can get the better of me. Changes in seasons can make me sick. Long hours at work can make me sick. And at times, the two rest days a week is not enough anymore. I look forward to paid leaves and I finally understand the words “unwind” and “burnout.” What I have observed in my days of sickness is that my body was weak, but my spirit is even weaker. I was able to get up to eat and drink, but I was not able to pick up my Bible, do my devotions, and pray like I used to. As Christians, we go through non-stop warfare. In every minute of every day we go into battle against the spiritual forces sent by the enemy, and if the flesh is weak, our spirits might not have what it takes to win over our unseen foes. It’s harder for me to feed my spirit when my body is weak. It’s difficult to be productive at work, be nice to people, resist cravings, resist lustful thoughts when I don’t get at least six hours of sleep. When I give in to my cravings after meals, it’s more difficult for me to resist other temptations. When I refuse to do any exercise or any physical activity because I’m feeling lazy, I find it difficult to open my Bible and pray. All these things are based on my opinion. I have not studied the Bible, I am not a pastor, and I do not have a degree in theology. If you think you can relate to this article then maybe we could talk about it and figure out how to equip ourselves in our Christian walk. However, all I’m trying to say is that we should really take good care of our bodies because we are temples of God. The Bible says: 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 New International Version (NIV) 16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple. We are the temple of God. We should not be destroying God’s temple. We need to be disciplined. Here are some of the things we could do: We have to drink eight glasses of water a day, sleep for eight hours, exercise regularly and have time for Bible reading and praying to God. I believe this sickness is my wake up call. I will take good care of my body better so that I could worship and serve Jesus better as well.
