Say Thank You

November 19, 2018

It was a cloudy Sunday morning, and it felt like it’s going to be a great day. It seemed so perfect because I completed all my chores the day before and I love cloudy days.

I woke up earlier than my wife, and I didn’t want to wake her. I knew she’d be up in a few minutes so, I went down to our living room and played the guitar while I waited for her to get up.

I heard movement from our bedroom upstairs. I waited for her to come down but for some reason, she took longer than usual. She was all dressed up and ready for work when she came down. I found it weird. It’s as if she was avoiding me.

I asked her what’s wrong and she cried on my chest. I asked her again as I was getting worried. She composed herself and told me about how she was very disappointed with me. Again, I was clueless.

She said she was upset because I thanked everyone who attended my birthday dinner, everyone who gave me a gift, and everyone who greeted me on my birthday except for her!

My brain processed a flashback of my birthday dinner at home. Truly our friends and family enjoyed a magnificent feast, and the person responsible for it was my beautiful and loving wife. Instead of resting on her day off, she spent the day behind a hot stove cooking for me. And she was right! I forgot to thank her!

I felt so small and stupid. I apologised and told her I’m still learning how to be a good husband. I promised that I’ll be better in expressing my gratitude and I told her that I appreciate everything she does for our family. I sometimes amaze myself with my insensitivity.

What does the Bible say about saying thank you:

Romans 16:3-6
New International Version (NIV)

3 Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus. 4 They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them.

5 Greet also the church that meets at their house.

Greet my dear friend Epenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia.

6 Greet Mary, who worked very hard for you.

Here is Paul reminding us to appreciate those who showed us kindness. If we can say thank you to strangers, how much more should we express our gratitude to our loved ones who share goodness and make our lives better on a daily basis?

Friends, never fail to say thank you and appreciate the love shown by people, especially by friends and family. We receive generosity and kindness, and the least we could do is recognise their efforts. Never forget to say thank you.
