Appreciating the Levites

I finally completed my certification, and I’ll be honest, it’s been one of my most stringent tests yet.

When I completed the practical assessment, I didn’t get excited. I didn’t feel anything when the certification ended, I just went home and slept. However, when I woke up the next day, I felt a desperate need to praise and worship God. That morning, for some reason, I didn’t know how to begin to worship, so I launched Spotify and searched for my favourite Levites of our generation.

First, what are the Levites?

Levites are descendants of Levi, one of the sons of Jacob. God gave the Levites responsibilities to the Church. They oversee various ministries but they’re famous for leading the people in praising and worshipping God.

I needed the help of Levites that morning to help me worship.

Who are my favourite Levites in our generation?

Taya Smith of Hillsong United was at the top of my list. I listened to her mostly during the past few weeks. My Taya Smith song list was Prince of Peace, Touch the Sky and Oceans. These songs were on the loop throughout my certification.

Kari Jobe is another favourite, her song Steady my Heart was one of the songs I played on a loop along with Taya’s songs.

Jeremy Camp is one of my heroes. I listened to him a lot when I was serving full-time at church. His song Take You Back really seemed the perfect song after completing this mind-boggling, emotionally draining and physically exhausting test.

There are still a lot more I could mention: the whole Hillsong United team, Hillsong Young and Free, Darlene Czech, Israel Houghton, Don Moen, Chris Tomlin, DC Talk, Planet Shakers and so much more! I really can’t name them all in this piece, but man, these people have blessed my heart and life in ways I couldn’t explain!

I listen to their music, and they take me to a place where I could experience God. I felt God’s warm embrace every time I heard them, and for that I’m grateful.

I thank the Levites of our generation! May new Levites rise and continue what they started! May God bless all of them and bring them all the goodness in life!

Psalm 98

1

Sing to the Lord a new song,

for he has done marvellous things;

his right hand and his holy arm

have worked salvation for him.

2

The Lord has made his salvation known

and revealed his righteousness to the nations.

3

He has remembered his love

and his faithfulness to Israel;

all the ends of the earth have seen

the salvation of our God.

4

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth,

burst into jubilant song with music;

5

make music to the Lord with the harp,

with the harp and the sound of singing,

6

with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn—

shout for joy before the Lord, the King.

7

Let the sea resound, and everything in it,

the world, and all who live in it.

8

Let the rivers clap their hands,

let the mountains sing together for joy;

9

let them sing before the Lord,

for he comes to judge the earth.

He will judge the world in righteousness

and the peoples with equity.
