Beyond Fathom

I was praying to God when a random thought popped into my head. It was a simple question, but it stressed me out. The question was, “Why do you pray to a God whom you couldn’t fully understand?”

The more I thought about it, the more it bothered me. To be honest, there are a lot of things that I can’t fully understand with God. I asked the same question Job did,

Job 21:7-8

New International Version (NIV)

7

Why do the wicked live on?

growing old and increasing in power?

8

They see their children established around them,

their offspring before their eyes.

And there are still a whole lot more that I couldn’t comprehend. I was starting to freak out.

At that point, I heard the Holy Spirit whisper, “Do you want to understand the complexities of the universe?”

At that point, I felt like the prophet Isaiah,

Isaiah 6:5

New International Version (NIV)

5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”

I felt fear. If God explained to me the intricacies of the universe— the ripple effects of the actions of every single life form, the vastness of the things not yet discovered, and the alternate universes that exist— my brain would have turned into a pulp.

I answered, “No, I don’t want to understand everything.”

We cannot understand God. It’s not just possible to put God in a box that an ordinary human being will be able to explain His purpose and actions logically.

What we can do is worship, praise, and seek God’s will for us but we cannot expect to understand Him fully.

What we need is faith.

Faith that regardless of what’s happening, what we see, think or feel, we will choose to trust that God is good, He loves us, and He has fantastic plans for our lives.

I’m glad that I cannot fully understand the Lord. I think that if we can explain the nature of God, then He is not worthy to be worshipped. It's a great thing that our God is beyond fathom! Praise God who is worthy of all praise!

Ecclesiastes 8:16-17

New Century Version (NCV)

16 I tried to understand all that happens on earth. I saw how busy people are, working day and night and hardly ever sleeping. 17 I also saw all that God has done. Nobody can understand what God does here on earth. No matter how hard people try to understand it, they cannot. Even if wise people say they understand, they cannot; no one can understand it.
